Thiruvanvandoor, Alappuzha: The recent Kerala deluge had wrecked the lives of many families with loss of lives and property garnering the attention of public. However, there are many unknown families who stare at an uncertain future or whose plans were scuppered severely in the wake of disastrous floods.

A young woman, who lost everything in the deluge, had to cancel her wedding set for August 26. Luckily, help came soon with the intervention of political leaders. Thanks to the initiative of former chief minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy, the family was able to organise the wedding Monday.

Maya of Vanjippuzheth Colony, who had lost her father Krishnan two years ago, was living with her mother Mani. As wedding preparations were in full swing, the flood washed away everything, including the wedding saree and grocery items for the feast. They had to seek shelter at the relief camp at the Christian College, Chengannur.

Their plight came to light when Congress president Rahul Gandhi visited the area last week. Chandy, who was with Rahul, promised to take care of the wedding. Money for the wedding soon arrived in Mani's bank account.

Chandy arrived at Maya's house on Sunday to bless her. She offered respects by touching his feet. Akash, a native of Alappuzha, married Maya at the Vanavathukkara temple in Alappuzha.
