Kochi: The union ministry of urban affairs has honoured the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) for the non-motorised transport (NMT) project it implemented at Edappally junction in the city.
The KMRL had improved the junction, providing more facilities to pedestrians and vehicles as part of its master plan to boost NMT along the metro rail corridor of the city.
KMRL finance director Thirunam Archunan received the award at the Urban Mobility India conference held in Nagpur.
KMRL managing director Muhammad Hanish said NMT has been given a priority at all Kochi Metro stations and those under construction. The Edapally junction development was carried out at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore.
Separate electronic signals have been provided for pedestrians to cross the road in the busy junction. Unlike other junctions that allow a free left turn for vehicles, a waiting for the green is essential at Edappally to turn left. This is to allow pedestrians to cross without worry.
An underpass was built for people to cross from the metro station to the other side. Road crossings are marked securely. Signages, anti-dust measures, full lighting throughout the night under the flyover, footpath lighting, roof for the footpath, separate pre-paid autorickshaw stand and hand railing for the footpath are other facilities.
