Palakkad: In a daring daylight highway heist, a 10-member gang drove away a car with nearly Rs one crore worth ornaments of Kalyan Jewellers after waylaying the vehicle near here.

The vehicle that was carrying gold from the Thrissur branch of Kalyan Jewellers to Coimbatore was attacked on Monday. The vehicle was found abandoned in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

The robbery took place at 11.30 am on Monday at Chavadi on the national highway between Walayar and Coimbatore. The assailants had arrived in two cars and drove away with the gold, silver jewellery and the company's car.

Two drivers - Thrissur natives C R Arjun (22) and T S Wilfred (31) - were injured in the attack. According to the drivers, the robbers rammed their car from behind near a petrol pump at Chavadi. Arjun stopped the car and got out to confront the occupants of the other car.

Meanwhile, another car with assailants arrived from the Coimbatore side and they broke the wind-shield of the company's car. When Arjun and Wilfred tried to stop them, they were beaten up and dumped on the road. The assailants then took the car along with the jewellery and sped towards Coimbatore side.

Though workers of the petrol pump rushed to help after hearing the cries of help of Arjun and Wilfred, the assailants had fled the scene by then. The drivers were provided primary treatment and taken to Chavadi police station. The drivers, in their statement to the police, said that there were nine people in both the cars and some of them were wearing masks.

The case is being probed by Tamil Nadu's Madukkarai police.
