2,407 new COVID-19 cases in Kerala, active cases at 9-month low

Thiruvananthapuram: The number of active COVID-19 patients in Kerala dropped to a nine-month low on the Christmas Day as the state records 2,407 new infections and 3,377 recoveries.

The state now has 24,501 active cases, the lowest since March 29.

The new cases were recorded after testing 44,754 samples, taking its Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 5.37 percent.

The COVID-19-related toll reached 46,318 after 11 recent deaths and 104 previously undocumented ones were made officials by the health department, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.

Of the new cases, 2,253 had contracted the virus through contact while 21 had come from outside the state. Among the contact cases, the source of infection of 116 is yet to be traced.

There are 17 health workers among the new cases.

The state has reported 52,33,298 COVID-19 cases so far. Of them, 51,61,800 recovered.

There are are 6 wards in 5 local bodies across Kerala where the Weekly Infection Population Ratio (WIPR) is above 10%. Strict Covid restrictions are being implemented in these regions.

Quarantine and hospitalization

A total of 1,24,904 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 1,21,046 are under home or institutional quarantine while 3,858 are in hospitals across the state. A total of 163 people were admitted in hospitals on Saturday.

Of the active cases, only 9.3% are currently hospitalized.
