Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal ordered a compensation of Rs.2.3 crore compensation in the accident case in which a father and a daughter were killed in an explosion after the ambulance in which they were travelling caught fire.

Varavukalayili James, 76, and his daughter Ambily Shaji, 46, belonging to Kattachira in Ettumanoor, were killed in the accident.

The accident occurred on July 26, 2016 at 6pm when James, who was suffering from pneumonia, was coming in an ambulance to Kottayam from a hospital in Mananthavady in Wayanad district.

Ambili's brother, a home nurse and the ambulance driver were with them. While reaching Muvattupuzha, the electric supply chain of the ICU cabin of the ambulance got ruptured.

Instead of undertaking necessary repair works, the driver continued the journey. This resulted in the spread of fire. Finding the sudden spread of fire, the driver suddenly got down from the vehicle and tried to evacuate others from the ambulance. But in the meantime, the ambulance moved forward, leading to an explosion with heavy sound, resulting in the death of both father and daughter.

Tribunal Judge Seshadrinathan ordered granting of compensation along with costs and interest to kin of Ambili, who stayed at Manjangal in Kesavadasapuram.

James was an employee of the Indian Airforce and the ISRO.

Advocate Kollengode DS Jayachandran appeared for the petitioners.
