Idukki: Ensuring access for people with disabilities is a challenge for institutions. A nation-wide Accessible India Campaign or Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan is on since late 2015 and more and more institutions are taking measures to ease mobility and access of persons with disabilities. A school in Keralas' Idukki district made a special gesture to welcome a 12-year-old girl student, Sera, to the campus by shifting the classroom from the top floor to the ground floor.

Sera, the Class 6 student, has cerebral palsy. Her biggest sorrow was that she could not go to school due to impaired movement. But that changed from Monday and Sera Alphonsa Nojin was elated to be at the Government Higher Secondary School, Kallar, for the first time after the online classes ended.

Her classmates gave a warm welcome as she arrived at the school along with her parents Nojin and Princy. Headmistress Selma, teacher Soja and SMC chairman K M Shaji also joined the students in welcoming her to the school. She was greeted with flowers and chocolates.

The classroom was decorated with balloons and her name written using colourful papers. They also cut a cake on the happy occasion.

As reported earlier schools across Kerala began normal functioning from Monday. As many as 47 lakh students returned to schools for regular academic sessions after nearly two years of shutdown in the wake of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.
