Kolenchery: The picture of a young woman holding her three-month-old baby while appearing for the equivalent examination for Class XII points to a woman's struggle even as she pursues her career goals.

Irumbanam-native Ambili K Chalil had to write the exam with her son in her arm at the St Peter’s Higher Secondary School as a relative, who promised to baby-sit, couldn’t turn up on time due to traffic logjam.

Later, the school authorities provided adequate care for the baby, and Ambili wrote the Malayalam exam on Sunday without any hiccup.

The Ernakulam district’s only transgender, Anamika Rajendran, also appeared for the test at the same centre. Anamika, a resident of Kayamkulam, enrolled under the literacy mission project to continue her studies, and was part of the Thrippunithura centre.

Thirty-five transgenders are appearing for the exams in the state this year.
