Khara idli with peanut chutney

Khara idli

Khara idli is a special dish which is extremely popular in Tamil Nadu. It is an incredibly easy dish to whip up using the batter made with soaked raw rice and lentils. Check out this recipe of khara idli which can be enjoyed with tasty peanut chutney.

Ingredients
For idli:
1 ½ cups raw rice
1 cup dal
1 cup grated coconut
5 red chillies
¼ tsp asafoetida
1 tsp salt
Water as required
For peanut chutney:
½ cup peanuts (roasted)
5 red chillies
1 green chilli
¼ tsp ginger
Tomato puree (Dice 2 tomatoes and roast it well in a pan. Grind it into a smooth puree)

Preparation
For idli:
The raw rice should be soaked in water for at least three hours
Prepare the batter by grinding the soaked raw rice, lentils, grated coconut, red chillies, asafoetida and salt along with a cup of water
The batter should have the consistency of the regular idli batter
Grease a small bowl with ghee and pour batter into it
Cook these in steam for 10 minutes on low flame
Peanut chutney:
Into a blender or mixie, add the peanuts, red chillies, green chilli, ginger and tomato puree
Grind well without adding water (water is not required as the tomato puree is added)
Season the chutney with half teaspoon of salt
The khara idli and peanut chutney taste best when served hot
Yogurt goes well with this dish, too.
