5,692 new COVID cases in Kerala after 45,417 tests on Monday

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala recorded 5,692 COVID-19 cases on Monday, pushing the caseload to 11,72,882.

As many as 2,474 people were cured of the infection, taking the total recoveries to 11,20,174.

The active cases touched 47,596, Health Minister K K Shailaja said in a press release.

In the last 24 hours ending 2 pm, 45,417 samples were tested and the test positivity rate was 12.53 per cent.

With 11 deaths being reported on Monday, the state's death toll has risen to 4,794.

Of the positive cases, 23 were health workers, while 188 had come from outside the state and 5,088 infected through contact. The source of infection of 393 among them is unknown.

One UK returnee has also tested positive for coronavirus.

More restrictions

The Kerala government on Monday announced new restrictions in the state in wake of the recent COVID surge.

• Restaurants and shops are to close at 9 pm

• Public events cannot be longer than two hours.

• More than 200 people will not be allowed in functions.

• In closed door events, only 100 people are allowed.

• Restaurants to function with only 50 per cent of its seating capacity.

• Mega shopping festivals have been banned.

• Food shall not be served during public functions. Packed food can be given instead.

The measures come as Kerala is tackling both a COVID surge and fast-depleting vaccine stocks.

Testing and quarantine

A total of 1,75,856 people are under observation in various districts. Of these, 1,68,827 are under home or institutional quarantine and 7,029 are in hospitals.

1,270 people were admitted in hospitals on Monday.

So far, 1,38,14,258 samples (including the augmented sample) have been sent for testing.

On Monday, 12 more regions have been converted into hotspots taking the total number to 403 in the state.

India hit a new coronavirus infection record with 1,68,912 new cases, the highest single-day rise so far, taking the total tally of cases to 1,35,27,717 on Monday.

The national COVID-19 recovery rate has fallen below 90 per cent.

The active cases have surpassed the 12-lakh mark, while the death toll increased to1,70,179 with 904 daily new fatalities, the highest since October 18, 2020, the data updated at 8 am showed.
