Heavy rain: Schools, colleges to be shut in some districts

Kottayam: Incessant rain continued to lash Kerala, especially the Idukki, Kottayam and Wayanad districts, flooding low-lying areas and filling up dams.

The district collectors in Idukki and Kottayam have declared a holiday on July 11 (Wednesday) for all educational institutions, excluding professional colleges.

In Wayanad, all schools and colleges, except professional colleges will have a holiday on Wednesday.

All schools and colleges, including professional colleges, in Ernakulam district will be closed on Wednesday.

All educational institutions, except professional colleges, in Cherthala, Ambalappuzha and Kuttanad taluks will remain shut on Wednesday, Alappuzha collector said.

Water level kept rising in Banasura Sagar dam and Karapuzha reservoirs in Wayanad and shutters have been already raised at the latter. As the Kabani river is in spate, the Wayanad district collector has requested Mysuru district administration to lower the shutters of Kabani reservoir as low-lying areas face the risk of flooding. Eight rescue camps have been opened in Wayanad that has been reeling under continuous downpour for the past six days.

A landslide has been feared in the Wayanad forests as water has risen in the Meenpatti river, near Pashukadav, in Kozhikode. Three families have been shifted from there.

Water level is rising in Peruvannamoozhi and Kakkayam dams in Kozhikode district as the Kuttiyadi river is also overflowing.

Down south, Idukki district is receiving copious rain for the second straight day.

The water level in Idukki dam has risen to 2,355.86 feet. Malankara dam in Idukki is also brimming and authorities have warned that shutters could be opened anytime. Muvattupuzha irrigation valley officials have asked those on Thodupuzha river shore to be cautious.

The district recorded 67.2 mm rain during the 24 hours that ended at 8 am on Tuesday. Idukki taluk got the maximum – 87 mm, while Udumbunchola had the least at 49.6 mm. Rainfall in other taluks (in mm): Peerumedu 77, Devikulam 67.8, Thodupuzha 54.6.
