This village officer moonlighted his way to fame

Elankunnappuzha: A village officer on an island off Kochi has become a celebrity of sorts after he wielded the broom to sweep the government office clean in the absence of the designated sweeper.

M R Rajeev, the officer in charge of the Elankunnappuzha village office, said that he had been doing the sweeper’s job at least two times a month when sweeper Shantha was required to work in the taluk office. He did not think of it as a commendable job until a well-wisher recorded the strange work and posted it on social media.

“After all, your office is just like your house,” he said.

Rajeev’s moonlighting was exposed when local Kerala Congress (J) leader N K Sachu sought refuge at the village office on a rainy day. He shot the village officer’s work on his mobile phone and uploaded it on WhatsApp.

Rajeev said that the village office was without a compound wall and stray dogs and antisocial elements thronged the place at night. The government office would be left dirty every morning, he added.
