Kochi: A 57-year-old fishing labourer hanged to death disillusioned over the delay in procuring a land-related document required to take loan, a day after returning dejected from the Revenue Divisional Office.

The dead, Sajeevan of Koickal House at Maliuankara in Kochi, blamed the government machinery for his death in the suicide note which was recovered from his dress. Police had conveyed to the family about the suicide note.

He was found hanging from a tree on the house plot on Friday morning by his wife Sathi.

His relatives claimed he was frustrated over the delay in obtaining the land conversion certificate despite visiting the village office, taluk office and the Fort Kochi RDO several times.

My father asked me to complain to the district collector about the disappointing experience at the RDO, Sajeevan' son said.

Sajeevan intended to take a loan by mortgaging his 4-cent residential plot which was already mortgaged with a chit fund company. The bank officials reportedly advised him to produce the land conversion certificate as the property was shown as paddy field in the revenue records.

He was doing the rounds of offices for about one-and-a-half years to obtain the land conversion certificate. Meanwhile, he had borrowed money from several people to settle the loan with the chit fund company. He had approached the bank with the title deed taken back from the chit fund company.

Sajeevan was found positive for COVID-19 during tests held prior to autopsy.
