Kerala reports 8,655 new COVID-19 infections; active cases drop below 1 lakh after a month

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's active COVID-19 cases dropped below one lakh after a month on Thursday as it recorded 8,655 new infections and 22,707 recoveries.

The state currently has 99,424 active patients.

The new coronavirus cases were reported after testing 64,650 samples, taking the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 13.38 percent.

The COVID-19-related toll reached 63,338 after 108 recent deaths and 193 previously undocumented ones were made official by the health department, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.

Of the new cases, 7,884 had contracted the virus through contact while 24 had come from outside the state. Among the contact cases, the source of infection of 660 is yet to be traced.

There are 87 health workers among the new cases.

The state has reported 64,49,026 COVID-19 cases so far. Of them, 62,85,477 recovered.

Quarantine and hospitalization

A total of 2,14,307 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 2,09,925 are under home or institutional quarantine while 4,382 are in hospitals across the state. A total of 679 people were admitted in hospitals on Thursday.

Of the active cases, only 4.5% are currently hospitalized.
