Kerala's active COVID-19 cases drop under 20K for first time in 1.5 years

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's active COVID-19 cases dropped under the 20,000-mark for the first time since August 2020 as the state recorded 2,423 new cases and 2,879 recoveries on Thursday.

The state now has 19,835 active cases. The previous lowest was 19,538 recorded on August 22, 2020.

The new cases were recorded after testing 58,459 samples, taking its Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 4.14 percent.

The COVID-19-related toll reached 47,441 after 15 recent deaths and 149 previously undocumented ones were made official by the health department, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.

Of the new cases, 2,262 had contracted the virus through contact while 27 had come from outside the state. Among the contact cases, the source of infection of 108 is yet to be traced.

There are 26 health workers among the new cases.

The state has reported 52,44,501 COVID-19 cases so far. Of them, 51,76,535 recovered.

There are are 6 wards in 5 local bodies across Kerala where the Weekly Infection Population Ratio (WIPR) is above 10%. Strict Covid restrictions are being implemented in these regions.

Quarantine and hospitalization

A total of 1,10,680 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 1,07,074 are under home or institutional quarantine while 3,606 are admitted to hospitals across the state. A total of 172 people were admitted in hospitals on Thursday.

Of the active cases, only 10.5% are currently hospitalized.
