Thiruvananthapuram: The killers of a 14-year-old girl in Kovalam have admitted to the crime. A woman and her son, who were the girl's neighbours, told the police that they committed murder to save him after he had sexually assaulted the teen. The girl had threatened to reveal the matter to others.

The accused Rafeeqa Beevi and her son Shafeeq said during the evidence-collection that they struck her head with a hammer after banging her head against a wall.

The girl's murder at Azhaamkulam in Kovalam, which occurred on January 14, 2021, came to light only last month. The case became a topic of intense public debate over allegations that the police tortured the parents of the girl after suspecting them for the girl's murder.

How it all happened

It was near the house of the slain girl that Rafeeqa Beevi and Shafeeq stayed in a rented house. Shafeeq became close to the girl and later sexually assaulted her. The girl told him that she would tell this to others.

Rafeeqa and Shafeeq reached her house when she was alone. While they were engaged in a verbal duel with the girl, an enraged Rafeeqa banged the girl's head against the nearby wall. When the girl fell down, Shafeeq hit her with a hammer. Realising that the girl became motionless, they returned to their home with the hammer.

Later, both of them tried to put the murder blame on the parents of the girl. The police fell to this claim and intimidated the parents by questioning them for days.

Finally, the truth behind the murder came to light during the questioning of Rafeeqa and Shafeeq in connection with the murder of an old woman in Mullur.
