Kannur: CPM activist Haridas was murdered in front of his home by five people, the victim's younger brother who was witness to the crime said.

"All the five individuals who attacked my brother are RSS and BJP activists," Haridas' brother Surendran said on Monday, hours after the murder shortly after midnight.

When I rushed outside hearing the commotion, the assailants were fleeing the scene with weapons, he added.

"There was a threat from the RSS and BJP following a recent scuffle at the temple. When my elder brother did not return late in the night his wife summoned me to their home. We had dozed off awaiting his arrival. We rushed outside on hearing the commotion,” Surendran said.

“They flashed their weapons at us to stop us from approaching them," he added.

CPM activist and Punnol native Haridas was hacked to death in Kannur's Thalassery on Monday.

Haridas, who was a fisherman, was murdered at 1.30 am while returning from work.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has blamed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for the murder.
