New Mahe (Thalassery): The police team investigating the murder of CPM activist K Haridasan here has come across more evidence regarding the involvement of the RSS-BJP leaders arrested in the case. Meanwhile, the investigating officers also questioned a policeman who is a relative of one among the accused after it emerged that the two had spoken over phone before and after the murder.

“On February 14 – a week before the murder – K V Vimin and some others had gone in search of two persons named Nijin Das and Atmajan to carry out the plan to harm Haridasan,” said the remand report filed by the police. Vimin is among the four persons who are now in remand and it was he who gave such a statement, said the report.

The police have already questioned Nijin Das, who belongs to Punnol. However, he was later let off. Even though the police have not revealed the role of Nijin Das in the murder, his name is mentioned in the remand report. At the same time, the police have not disclosed anything about Atmajan.

Those who were arrested and later remanded in the case so far are: K Lijesh (37), a ward councillor of Thalassery Municipality and BJP ‘mandalam’ president residing at Sree Sankaranalloor House, Kommavayal; K V Vimin (26), RSS ‘khand karyavahak’ belonging to K V House, Punnol; Amal Manoharan (26), RSS 'sakha mukhya sikshak’ of Devi Kripa, Punnol and M Sunesh alias Mani of Sunesh Nivas, Gopalpetta in Thalassery.

Cop questioned

In a related development, Suresh, a civil police officer attached to Kannavam police station in Kannur, was questioned in the case. He is married to the younger sister of the wife of Lijesh, the BJP councillor who is now in remand.

The questioning wass based on the call records obtained by the investigating team which showed that Lijesh had called Suresh 30 minutes before the murder and by 6 am on Monday after the crime. (Haridasan was killed around 1.30 am on Monday).

Even though investigators had sought information from Suresh on the matter during the preliminary stage of the probe, he had denied having received the calls. But, the cop was summoned again when Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Ashok Yadav reached Kannur to analyse the progress of the investigation. Suresh said that he was on duty at the venue of a temple festival when the phone calls were received and had forgotten about them when he was earlier questioned by the probe team. However, while Suresh admitted during Wednesday’s questioning that Lijesh had spoken to him, the cop said that he could not recall the conversation. Suresh was let off after questioning.

Probe on track’

The case is being investigated by a special team led by City Additional Superintendent of police Prince Abraham. A high-level meeting of police officers was held in Kannur on Wednesday to discuss the progress of the case and it was chaired by IG (Northern Range) Ashok Yadav. “The investigation is on the right track. Security will be intensified in areas vulnerable to law and order issues,” said the IG.
