Payasam or kheer is an unavoidable course in the traditional sadya or feast. Cherupayar or yellow split dal payasam is rich, tasty, and is a great way of ending the elaborate feast. Here is the recipe for yellow split dal payasam that can be the star of your Onasadya.

Ingredients
1 cup yellow split dal
5 jaggery balls
4½ cups water
½ cup coconut shards
10 cashews
¼ cup raisins
3 tbsp ghee
First extract of coconut milk
Second extract of coconut milk
¼ tsp cumin powder
¼ tsp cardamom powder
¼ tsp dried ginger powder
A pinch of salt

Preparation
Melt the jaggery in some water
Dry roast the yellow split dal
Pressure cook the roasted dal until 3 whistles
Fry the cashews, raisins and coconut shards in ghee 
Keep them aside to be used later
Heat the jaggery syrup in a thick bottomed vessel
Add the cooked yellow split dal into this
Mix well
Now add the second extract of coconut milk
Add the cumin powder, cardamom powder and the dried ginger powder as well
Add a pinch of salt as well
Finally add the first extract of coconut milk
Mix well
Garnish with fried cashews, raisins and coconut shards.
