It's Rakshabandhan; here are 5 movies on brother-sister bonds

It's Rakshabandhan, that day of the year when brothers all over the country express their love for their dear sisters. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the lunar month, Shravana.

The day is marked by a ritual of tying a rakhi or a sacred thread around the wrist of the brothers by their sisters. The thread implies that it is the duty of the brother to protect the sister and keep up the bond of brotherhood. This year, the traditional festival will be celebrated on August 26. Celebrating the day, we take a look at five Malayalam movies celebrating the beautiful bond:

Koode

The Anjali Menon movie is the most recent flick which focused on the relationship between a brother and sister. Just as the word 'koode' speaks volumes in terms of love and care, the movie showed the bond that Joshua (Prithviraj) and Jenny (Nazriya) had for each other. The film opens with Joshua returning home on receiving news of Jenny’s death. It takes us through the depth of sadness to a sense of belonging. The best part of the film is the how Jenny lifts up Joshua from his bitterness.

Hitler

Remember the epic scene where a brother walks in the midst of his five younger sisters. Hitler, starring Mammootty in the lead, saw how Madhavankutty, a rich man locally known as 'Hitler' due to his rough and tough character and his uncontrolled rage at the youngsters of the area, for stalking his five young sisters. Just like the brothers in real life, the movie showed the warmth and affection that a brother had for his sisters.

Aniyathipraavu

Although the movie is often tagged as intense love story of 90s, the film also shed light on the bond that three brothers had for their little sister. "Njangade kunjupengal" was how they even addressed her. It was evident that it was the care that prompted them to be angry after the sister left family for the sake of another man. The climax sequences reflected how the brothers just wanted their sister to be happy.

Kireedom

The Mohanlal-starrer is basically about Sethumadhavan and his hopes and aspirations and his ties with father. But the small yet pivotal brother-sister sequences in the movie will definitely melt your heart. In a scene, Sethumadhavan's sister comes and wakes him up from sleep and asks to exercise before his father comes. Aren't sisters always the helping souls? And when it comes to playing pranks, sisters are still the same. In another scene, Sethu and his sister pokes their little brother and tell their father about his mischief.

Kaliyoonjal

After the death of their parents, Nandagopal (Mammootty) raises his sister Ammu (Shalini), who is suffering from epilepsy. Ammu is shown as a pampered kid. The beautiful songs, which depict the strong bond that the duo shares, went a long way in making the movie one among the best films based on brother-sister ties.

Pavithram

Pavithram is yet another good movie dealing with the relationship between siblings. Unnikrishnan (Mohanlal) and Meenakshi (Vinduja Menon) have about 30 years age difference between them. The story tells about a brother who sacrifices his life for the sake of his little sister. The emotional sequences by the end of the movie will move you to tears for sure.
