When postman came calling in Malayalam movies

Can you imagine a day without mobile phone and internet? Well, in today's world it's pretty hard to. But, it is the postal service that is still one of the largest modes of communication in India. Did you know that the first Indian Post Office was established in 1837? The National Postal Day is held on October 10 every year. With the advent of internet, the significance of letters has definitely declined, especially in urban areas, and today, Onmanorama takes a look at a few postmen whom we have seen in Malayalam films.

Mukesh in 'Mutharamkunnu P O'

The 1985 Malayalam film was directed by Sibi Malayil with Mukesh and Lizy in the lead roles. The movie saw Mukesh as Dilip Kumar in the role of a postman. Dilip Kumar comes to their village as a postmaster and falls in love with a girl. This postman is pretty serious about his job, mind it!

Jagadeesh in 'Ennum Nanmakal'

The 1991 Malayalam film was directed by Sathyan Anthikkadu and written by Raghunath Paleri. Although the film had Sreenivasan, Santhi Krishna, and Jayaram in the lead roles, postman played by Jagadeesh had a significant role. Jagadeesh as postman Ulpalakshan made us laugh each time he appeared on screen. The comical scenes by him lightened the mood. This postman tried really hard to woo three girls in his village!

Postman in 'Thurakkatha Vathil'

Actors Prem Nazir, Madhu, Jayabharathi and Sreelatha Namboothiri played the lead roles in this 1970 film directed by P. Bhaskaran. But there is definitely one pivotal scene involving a postman delivering a love letter. The scene involves comedian Bahadoor who asks the postman if he delivered a letter to Ambujan. The postman of course delivered the letter but to her father which lands Bahadoor in a crisis situation. This postman just did his job!

Innocent in 'Oridathoru Postman'

The 2010 film was directed by Shaji Aziz. The movie features Kunchacko Boban, Innocent, Sharath Kumar and Meera Nandan in the lead roles. Innocent plays the role of postman Gangadharan, a lazy man who does not do his duties well. Well, undoubtedly this is the funniest postman.

Renji Panicker in 'Bhayanakam'

The 2018 film was directed by Jayaraj and stars writer-turned-actor Renji Panicker and Asha Sarath. The story is set in Kuttanad and its backwaters in central Kerala during the World War II and revolves around a postman, who delivers money orders at homes of those who have joined the army. When the war intensifies, he starts bringing in telegrams declaring people dead and he slowly becomes an omen of death. The film which fetched National awards for direction and adapted screenplay saw Renji Panicker in the most promising role and in the finest performance. Make way for this postman!
