AMMA forms special internal complaint cell for women

Kochi: The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is all set to welcome new changes in its organizational structure.

The organization for film actors and actresses working in Malayalam cinema has decided that an internal cell will be formed within the organization for women to register their complaints. The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Tuesday.

Inching a step closer to gender equity, the association has also decided to include four women artists in its executive committee. In accordance with the new reforms, a woman will be considered to the post of vice-president in the organization.

AMMA formed the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC)-- the anti-sexual harassment committee-- after a lot of deliberation, ahead of its mega show in Abu Dhabi on December 7 to collect funds for flood relief.

The decision came in the wake of the demands raised by Women in Cinema Collective (WCC).

WCC, represented by Malayalam actors Rima Kallingal and Padmapriya, had filed a writ petition on October 16, demanding the formation of the ICC at AMMA, in line with the Vishaka Guidelines and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (Act 14 of 2013) or PoSH Act.

After the WCC filed its writ petition, the High Court had issued notice to AMMA seeking response about constituting the ICC.
