RIP SPB: 5 Malayalam hits of the legend

The Malayalam film industry is yet to come to terms with the passing away of music great S.P. Balasubrahmanyam or popularly known as SPB.

Singer-actor SP Balasubrahmanyam succumbed to coronavirus on Friday. The 74-year-old actor was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai in the first week of August after testing positive for coronavirus.

SPB sang for numerous Malayalam films and was always a frequent visitor to the state to participate in musical events. He had sung 120 Malayalam songs. Here are few Malayalam songs sung by the legend that will take you down the memory lane.

Tharapadham Chethoharam

The song was from 1991 Malayalam film directed by Jomon and starring Mammootty and Shweta Menon in the lead roles. The song was written by P K Jomon and tuned by Illayaraja. SPB sung along with KS Chitra.

Ootypattanam

Featured in popular Malayalam romantic comedy Kilukkam, Ootypattanam was sung with M G Sreekumar and K S Chitra.

Paal Nilavile

The song was from 1993 film directed by Rajiv Anchal starring Mohanlal in the lead. The song was composed by Raveendran.

Ee Kadalum Marukadalum

The film Kadalpalam directed by KS Sethumadhavan starred Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Jayabharathi, Sheela, Bahadoor and Adoor Bhasi in the lead. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam debuted in Malayalam with this film. It was R. K. Shekhar who recommended S.P.B. to Devarajan.

Nenjil Kanjabaanam

Composed by SP Venkatesh, the song was from the Mohanlal movie Gandharvam and was a massive hit.
