Democracy sausage is an Australian tradition, in which sausage stalls are opened near polling booths on the voting day for fund-raising purposes. Voters, waiting in long queues to cast their votes, satiate hunger with these meaty treats from 'sausage sizzles' where volunteers prepare barbecued sausages, fondly called as snags.
Democracy sausages have given a carnival feel to the polls in Australia which exhort a compulsory voting policy.
Thanks to ABC channel host and news presenter Michael Rowland and random volunteers across the city, Washington D.C. finally got a chance to grab a bite of the tasty democracy sausages on their polling day. Stalls opened near various polling booths across the US capital received an amusing response from the voters who embraced the tradition with an open heart.
The hashtag #DemocracySausages started trending on social media platforms in no time and the nail-biting election moments gave way to a picnic mood.
