Vegetables like tomato, capsicum, egg plant, and potato, belonging to the 'nightshade' category form a part of our daily diet. However, studies have revealed that most of the nightshades which come under the Solanaceae family are not fit for human consumption. These vegetables could cause severe health issues in people suffering from arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, stomach ailments, chest burns, asthma, and skin cancer. Besides, these vegetables contain small amount of nicotine as well.
In nighthsades, it has been proved that the amount of an alkaloid called solanine is dangerously high. It would severely affect the joints and movements of the muscles. Alkaloids which are natural pesticides can cause inflammation and stress in human beings. Solanine which jeopardizes the functioning of an enzyme in the nervous system, affects the joints causing severe pain.
The calcitriols in nightshades increases the rate of calcium absorption by the human body. The extra calcium gets deposited in the cells thereby decreasing the amount of calcium in the bones. Medical experts advice that those who suffer from arthritis and joint pain should avoid consuming vegetables which come under the nightshade category. You can see the difference by avoiding these for three months and then resume eating each type of vegetable a week.
Nightshades also have the reputation of being store houses of energy, which makes you relaxed. This is the reason why people get easily addicted to fast food like potato chips, pizza, tomato soup and ketchup. The amount of alkaloid present in these vegetables could be lowered by baking, boiling or steaming it. The rate of nicotine will be increased up to 3% when cooked potato is mashed. Similarly, raw tomato has high nicotine content which would lower as the fruit ripens.
