Meet Anju, the Adimali-based home-baker who made Mammootty’s birthday cake

Mega star Mammootty celebrated his seventieth birthday at Kallar near Adimali recently. Home baker Anju, who baked the cake which Mammootty had cut for the celebration, shares her experience of baking the most special birthday cake in her life.

Anju had returned home after closing her shop ‘Cake 4 u’ and was getting ready to watch her favorite TV serial when her friend Amal from Adimali had called her. He told her that he needs a cake within an hour for Mammootty’s birthday celebration. It was 10 pm and she was expected to deliver the cake by 11 pm. Anju's husband Praveen was a bit hesitant to believe this when she shared it with him. He thought that a super star like Mammootty would never buy cake from a small shop like theirs. He told Anju that someone who wanted a cake urgently had tried to trick her.

While Anju was confused whether to bake the cake or not, she received a call from an unknown number which her Truecaller app showed as Ansar’s. “When I picked up the call, he told me that he will hand over the phone to ‘mol’ (daughter). It was Mammootty’s daughter Surumy! She told me that they need a simple Vancho cake with just white ganache topping and minimal chocolate decoration. She asked me to write ‘Happy Birthday Bappi’. I felt relieved that she had called because Amal had told me to write ‘Vapachi’ on the cake. As soon as I hung up the phone, my hands and legs began to shiver,” she recollects.

Anju quickly baked a cake and did a simple white ganache topping as Surumy had asked. However, Anju felt that the cake was too simple and wanted some color. She thought that she could manage by placing a colorful birthday topper. But, to her dismay, she couldn’t find one in her collection. Besides, it was already late and Amal had been calling to ask whether the cake was ready. While packing the cake that had a very simple chocolate decoration, Anju wished that she had got this order a bit earlier.

“Can a home baker wish for a greater fortune than the chance to bake a cake to celebrate the birthday of a great actor like Mammootty? Thanks to the iconic Adimali junction, Amal and Mammootty’s daughter. I had hoped to share the picture after getting a few pictures of him cutting the cake. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get one. Anyways, Happy Birthday Mammookka. I wish that you shine as Keralites’ pride for many more years,” concludes Anju.
