‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is a well-known adage and there is indeed some truth in this belief. Apple is not only a tasty fruit but also is rich in nutrients, having plenty of vitamins and minerals. It also boosts our immunity.

However, many people face a problem in storing apples. While they remain fresh in shops, apples often start becoming stale within a couple of days after bringing them home. It is seen that the colour and sweet smell of apples would start diminishing even when they are kept in the refrigerator.

Here are some tips to store apples without losing their freshness for many days.

How to keep in the fridge
Even though apples could be stored in a fridge, you need to take some precautions. Avoid keeping them in the fridge with the same cover brought from the shop. Instead, wrap each apple with a newspaper or craft paper and place it in the fridge. This method of storage helps retain the freshness of the apple for many days. Apples kept as such – without wrapping – in the fridge could become stale soon even when the temperature inside is low.

Keep separately
Many times, people buy a large quantity of apples when there is a discount sale. However, storing them fresh for several days is a big challenge. The ideal way to retain the freshness of the apples is again wrap them separately with paper before keeping them in the fridge. However, while doing so, you also have to regulate the temperature inside the fridge to 30-35 degrees Fahrenheit.
Avoid storing apples in plastic covers as they could then get spoilt easily.

Don’t mix with other fruits
Some people have the habit of placing all types of fruits in a single cover. But, this should never be done. Apples, particularly, should not be kept along with fruits such as bananas, grapes and oranges. When apples are stored with citrus fruits such as oranges, they will spoil very fast.

Sliced apples
Apples turn brown soon after they are cut. This happens because the enzymes in the fruit react with the oxygen in the air. To store sliced apples effectively, they should not be mixed with other apples.
