Budget is what bothers everyone when it comes to constructing a house of their dreams. This chic and stylish house owned by Thomas and Sini is a perfect model for a modern abode, built on a moderate budget. Thomas, who is the youngest among eight siblings, wanted his house to be spacious, with abundant supply of sunshine and fresh air. He happened to see a few homes built in the Laurie Baker style when he visited Thiruvananthapuram as part of his business venture.
He, impressed by those houses, imagined his own house to be built in this unique architectural style. His wife Sini too was bowled over by the idea of an elegant home built in the Laurie Baker style. Thomas then approached Cosford, a construction firm which specializes in designing Laurie Baker style homes.
The house which stands on a 6.25 cents plot near Irumpanam, exudes the regal charm of the colonial style. Thomas was interested to build the house using red mud bricks while Sini preferred normal bricks. Both types of bricks were used in the construction of the house.
Lots of natural light is welcomed into the house, with an excellent air circulation as well. The beautiful courtyard near the living room is truly one of the striking features of the interiors. The dining area is arranged adjacent to the open kitchen.
There are three bath-attached bedrooms in the house. One bedroom is in the ground floor while two are in the upper storey. There are enough storage spaces in the bedrooms. Thomas had allotted a budget of Rs 28 lakhs for the construction of his house. However, he decided to enhance the elegance of the stairway by paneling the stairs with wood and also built an attic, which made the budget go beyond Rs 28 lakhs.
A spacious sit-out is arranged on the upper storey where the guests could gather for parties. The look of this area could be changed, as required, by making various arrangements. Instead of a terrace, mud tiles are paved on the roof which helps lower the temperature inside the house.
The expenses could be kept at bay if the use of wood is limited while furnishing the house. Besides, expensive floor tiles and bathroom fittings are used in this house, which added onto the budget. If moderately priced furnishings and decor are used, a similarly elegant house could be easily constructed within a budget of Rs 28 lakhs.
