Aaby and his family had wished to build a house, in their 4-cent plot at the housing colony in Kalamassery, by wisely utilizing the spaces. Their brand new house, named 'Aramam,' stands out for his unique exteriors which foreground the charm of the box-shaped elevation. Its distinct green hue grabs the attention of the onlookers as it is soothing on the eyes. Aaby’s wife Geetha, who is an officer at the agricultural department, was very particular that lush greenery should be spotted in the exteriors and interiors of the house.
As there isn’t much space in the front courtyard, the vegetable garden was set on the open terrace with the flat roof. The vegetables required to the kitchen are easily cultivated here and the family is extremely happy that they have amazingly utilized the space at terrace.
The rules of the vastusastra were strictly followed while constructing the house. The position of the kitchen and the rooms are designed without disrupting the ‘grihamadyasoothram’. This ensures beautifully constructed spaces and great ventilation as well. There is a living space, dining area, kitchen and four bedrooms in this elegant house which has an area of 2130 sqft. There is a visual connectivity between the two floors as the ceiling is in double height.
Many little ‘tricks’ have been brilliantly executed in this house, by the designer, to avail maximum space. The pooja area is arranged as part of the wall in the dining area. The cupboards in the kitchen and the wardrobes in the bedroom are done in the concealed style. Enough storage facilities and in – built study spaces are arranged in all the bedrooms.
The courtyard fills the interiors with pleasant sunshine. The walls of the courtyard, decorated with natural stone cladding, are a highlighting feature here. The traditional furniture sets, which are more than hundred years old, bring in an old world charm to the interiors of the house. This furniture, inherited by the family, is truly unique pieces which add to the elegance of the house. Vitrified tiles in light shades are paved on the floor. Meanwhile gota stones adorn the stair way.
The family wasn’t ready to compromise on the quality of furnishing accessories and décor. They emphatically say that it has paid off as they didn’t incur severe losses even though water gushed into the house during the floods in August. Furnishing is done in plywood and multiwood of the highest quality. Aaby and his family have perceived their abode as a space which offers them peace and joy. They are extremely proud and happy that their ‘green’ home, right in the middle of the city, turned out to be exactly as they have dreamed.
These are the ways in which spaces were meticulously planned in this house built on a 4 cents plot.
The car porch is designed in the cantilever style.
The pooja room, wardrobes and cupboards are in the concealed style.
The space beneath the stair way has been turned into a utility area.
