It was Bhaskaran’s love for agriculture which inspired him to build a quaint house that emanates the charm of traditional architecture at Peralam in Kannur, Kerala. The house is constructed in the same plot where Bhaskaran does farming, so that he can tend to the plants as well. His house, named Ramanilayam, is the perfect example of a traditional dwelling which reflects the beauty of the surrounding bucolic setting.
The unplastered exterior walls, slope roof and the unique sit-out of this house are all classic features of the traditional Kerala architecture. Though exteriors exude elegance of traditional style, the interiors stand out for its minimalism and simplicity. This 800 sq ft house is constructed on a low budget as well. It is engineer Vysakh of the Pravega Associates who designed this beautiful house, giving prime importance to comfort and facilities.
As the family wanted to build a house on low budget, a unique design which required limited use of concrete was prepared. There are living and dining areas, kitchen and bedrooms in this beautiful house. The majestic pillars, which are the highlights in the sit-out, are crafted from Laterite stones that are commonly available in the Malabar area. Truss work is done in MS steel and is paved with Mangalore clay tiles.
A coat of paint is applied on roofing tiles and the exterior walls, without giving it an additional coat of hues. This adds a rustic look to the house which goes well with the mesmerizing rural setting.
Sit-out is arranged by paving granite. The main door is done in teak and the rest of the doors and windows are readymade. The interiors are not overcrowded with too many furniture. Gypsum false ceiling is installed in the living and the dining areas. An exquisite gypsum work enhanced with texture paint highlights the area from where one can enter the rest of the interiors from the living space.
The owner was not ready to compromise on the quality of building materials which add to the overall look and stability of the structure. Vitrified tiles in lighter shades are paved on the floor. Granite adorns the kitchen counter top which is in L-shape and the cabinets are in aluminum fabrication.
Meticulous planning had helped complete the construction of the house within the stipulated time. The source of the light was decided while the design of the house was being prepared. This helped make the necessary arrangements to let lots of natural light and fresh air into the house. Ramanilayam, with its charming looks and pleasant interiors, is the perfect holiday getaway for the family. The construction of the house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a low budget of Rs 13 lakh.
Using locally sourced laterite stones to construct the structure helped reduce the cost of construction to a great extent. As the family was sure that an additional floor wouldn’t be constructed on top of the house, laterite stones were used to build the foundation as well. To give the unplastered exterior walls a natural look, it was pointed using red mud mixture. Vitrified tiles moderately priced vitrified tiles are paved on the floor.
