Sajid, a native of Malappuram, is excited to share his experiences of designing his own dream dwelling. “I am a graphic designer. I decided to design my own house with just the experience of drawing a few plans as part of my job. This helped me execute my own ideas and designs,” says Sajid.
The family owned a 30 cents plot at Puthurpally near the University of Calicut. They had imagined a contemporary house with all the modern facilities which enjoyed abundant supply of fresh air and sun shine as well. Sajid had made a licensed engineer draw the plan that was conceived in his mind. It was Sajid himself who oversaw the construction of the structure.
The sloped roof, paved with the roofing tiles, suits the tropical climate of Kerala. This also lends a traditional look to the elevation. The structure is built by leaving enough space for the front yard, which also allows a spectacular view of the exteriors. Natural stones and grass are paved in alternate layers in the front yard. This helps the rain water seep into the ground easily. The drive way that begins from the gate is paved with laterite stones.
This elegant mansion, designed in 3100 sqft, has a sit out, formal and family living areas, kitchen with an adjacent work area and five bedrooms as well. The formal living area is arranged by ensuring enough privacy. Meanwhile, the family living area, dining space and the stairway are all part of the open hall. Vitrified tiles are used for flooring in the interiors. The gypsum false ceiling, enhanced with warm toned lights, fills the interiors with pleasant elegance.
The readymade furniture perfectly suits the general theme of the house. The windows and the doors are made using teak wood.
The ceiling above the stairway is in double height and the skylight here welcomes lots of pleasant sun shine into the house. There is a pebble courtyard below the stairway.
The kitchen cupboards are made using marine plywood. Meanwhile, the counter top is paved using nano white.
There are three bedrooms in the ground floor and two bedrooms in the upper storey. The bath attached bedrooms have in – built wardrobes for storage. Bunk beds are arranged in the kids’ bedroom.
As the house has been designed by giving prominence for natural lighting and cross ventilation, the temperature inside the house is always pleasant. The family is thrilled that they themselves have designed the house of their dreams. “My experience proves that anyone who can draw and has a little bit of imagination can design their own house. It helps save a considerable amount of money as well,” smiles Sajid.
