Abdulla, a veterinary doctor built his brand new house at his hometown in Thiruvegappura in Palakkad district, Kerala. His wife too is a doctor who practices Ayurvedic medicine. However, you wouldn’t see any extravagant decor or expensive furnishing in this house that are commonly seen in the ‘doctor’ houses. The house is designed in a cost-effective manner without adding unnecessary decorations to the exteriors. The tropical style roof is sloped and is paved with ceramic roof tiles.

Abdulla’s wife wanted a consulting room without hampering the privacy of the interiors. The stylish house, in 2600 sq ft area, has a car porch, sit-out, formal living area, dining space, kitchen with adjacent work area, four bedrooms and an upper living area.

The beautiful courtyard just beside the entrance door instantly catches the eye. Here, the floor is paved with synthetic turf. The skylight on the ceiling invites natural light as well. It is this courtyard that separates the consulting rooms and the main structure.

A corridor that begins from the entrance leads to the interiors of this house. The wooden tiles paved on the floor here also act as directions. Meanwhile, white vitrified tiles are paved on the floor in the common areas. The wooden finish tiles are used on the borders to highlight the white ones.

The interiors are designed in the open style which makes the spaces look vaster and ensure amazing ventilation as well. The double heighted ceiling of the living area too makes the interiors look incredibly spacious. Besides, this makes the communication between the two floors easier as well.

The TV unit is installed on the wall which is highlighted using natural stone claddings. The dining table can easily accommodate up to eight guests. There is a provision to install a TV unit here too.

The slant of the roof has been maintained in the upper living area without installing any false ceiling. The beautiful Roman blinds on the windows act as a designer element as well.

The bath-attached bedrooms are designed in the minimal style with in–built wardrobes for storage. The head boards are highlighted in darker shades of hues. The gypsum false ceilings and LED lights add to the charm of the bedrooms.

The kitchen is furnished in the multi wood and mica finish. Meanwhile, nano white is paved on the counter top.

The adjacent working kitchen is equipped with a gas stove and a traditional hearth as well. A wall here has been turned into storage spaces. In – built space for washing machine makes this area more efficient.

The house is built by retaining most of the trees in the 15 cents plot. Instead of tiles, the front yard is paved with baby mettle that allows rain water to seep into the earth. The construction of the house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a budget of Rs 48 lakh. The unique features and smart designing of this cost effective house have helped reduce the expenses. It would have in fact cost at least Rs 57 lakh to build a structure of that dimension, considering current rate of construction per square feet.
