A house in Thrissur remodelled through 100-day challenge

A house in Thrissur remodelled though 100-day challenge
The space between the newly added truss roofing and the ceiling has been turned into a utility area.

Jayavalli, her son Sajith and his family had been living in a 40-year-old double-storey house at Valappad in Thrissur, Kerala. The family decided to give their house a modern makeover when space constraints started bothering them. Besides, the spaces weren’t receiving enough natural light and air. They had entrusted the renovation works to noted architect Anoop, who is also their close relative. The family had given his team, a deadline of 100 days, to complete the renovation works.

Sajith runs a business of steel and roofing works. So, it was easier installing the truss roofing in the house. The space between the newly added truss roofing and the ceiling has been turned into a utility area. The outer walls have been mostly dismantled and redesigned. The interior spaces have been rearranged to make it more spacious and vaster. Redundant interior walls were removed and smaller rooms were combined to increase the space. The old house was 2000 sqft and an additional 1000 sqft area have been newly added as part of the renovation. Now, the house has a car porch, sit-out, living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with a work area and four bedrooms, designed in 3000 sqft.

The old kitchen and the store room were joined to expand the kitchen into a modern and spacious kitchen area. Meanwhile, the master bedroom was redesigned by combining two smaller bedrooms. The old flooring, electrical and sanitary items have been replaced with new ones. A new stairway too has been added in the interiors.

The modern dining table has a bench on one side. The metal louver window in double height on the wall of the dining area is the highlight here. Jali slits are done on the other side of this wall. This feature doesn’t allow anyone to catch a glimpse of the interiors from the outside while letting the family members grab a clear view of the outside. Lots of fresh air and light enter the house through these jali slits. Moreover, this feature appears as an attractive designer element on the exteriors. Jali works are installed on the wall above the car porch as well. This area has been turned into a gym space.

Bay windows with sitting spaces are extremely attractive and make the interiors space efficient. These windows could be used as study spaces for kids. Moreover, one could relax and enjoy the beautiful views of the garden from here.

A pantry counter is what connects the dining area with the kitchen. The kitchen cupboards, meanwhile, are done in cement boards with MDF finish. The counter top has been paved with granite.
