The roof has been made in the filler slab technology where plastering is done with the roofing tiles already in place.

David’s dream abode at Perambra in Thrissur, Kerala, is a fabulous example of a cost effective yet beautiful house with all the modern amenities. The owner has travelled around quite a bit and has gained vast experiences from his numerous journeys. He believes in the ideal that one shouldn’t build his or her abode by destroying or damaging the nature. The elderly couple stays alone at home as their only son Karthik works at Inforpark. So, they wanted a simple house which is easy to maintain as well.

The construction was entrusted to designer Santilal of CostFord which is committed in building environmental friendly houses. The family says they were impressed by Sanitilal’s houses that were featured in the homestyle feature on Manorama Online.

The roof has been made in the filler slab technology where plastering is done with the roofing tiles already in place. Locally sourced laterite stones have been used to build the structure. As mud plastering too has been done on these walls, there is no need for additional cement plastering or multiple coats of paint. These walls reduce the heat inside the house and helps in maintaining cooler atmosphere.

Designed in 1700 sqft, this amazing abode has a sit out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, two bedrooms, upper living area and a balcony as well. The common areas are designed in the open style. The entrance door opens to the formal living area.

The spacious prayer area is just beside the formal living area. This elegantly furnished area exudes positive vibes.

The spiral stairway in the hall is the highlight of the interiors. Wooden planks have been arranged on a metal frame to make this beautiful stairway. This stairway leads to the upper living area that has been turned into an impressive library.

The kitchen cabinets are made by installing aluminum shutters on ferro cement slabs. This feature has significantly helped in reducing the expenses. The bath attached bedrooms are simple yet elegant. The unique design of the house allows building of more rooms, if required, in the future.

The construction of this beautiful house, including the structure and the furnishing was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 18 lakh. The family is elated that they could get the house of their dreams without burning a hole in their pocket.

Among the many factors that helped in keeping a check on the expenses, using locally sourced laterite stones, roofing tiles and timber played a vital role. The walls have been mud plastered instead of the regular cement plastering. This saved the cost of bags of cement and paint as well, as the rustic walls do not require painting. The kitchen cabinets, meanwhile, are done in ferro cement and aluminum fabrication. Moreover, most of the furniture in the house has been reused.
