Most expatriates who build a house of their own in their hometowns in Kerala often build lavish abodes thinking that they need all the luxuries to spend their retirement life comfortably, in the future. However, they may be spending only a month-long holiday in their brand new homes. These houses could then lose its charm as it lacks proper maintenance and cleaning. Leju Thomas, a native of Thiruvalla, had all these in mind when he built his dream dwelling.

“I would be here only for a few days in a year. My parents would be able to come to check on the house only occasionally. It was their idea to build a house that is easy to maintain as no one stays here permanently. Architect Shinto had designed the house as per our likes and preferences. Only the ground floor has been completely furnished. The upper floor, meanwhile, has been furnished minimally with just the painting, flooring and lighting works done,” says Leju.

Designed in 2800 sqft, this beautiful abode has a car porch, sit out, formal and family living areas, dining space, kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, upper living area and a balcony.

Provisions for a TV unit on the ground floor and wiring work to fix air conditioners have been done. The family plans to buy all these appliances only when they move into the house permanently.

A wall in the formal living area is highlighted with paneling done in laminate and wooden finish.

Vitrified tiles are paved on the floor in the common areas. The family is interested in arranging an elaborate indoor garden. However, now, they have planted only a few plants that require minimum care, owing to the present situation. The elegant pebble courtyard is an attractive feature inside the house.

The bedrooms have lots of wardrobes in plywood and a laminate finish for storage. The kitchen, meanwhile, is furnished in multi wood with a laminate finish. The countertop has been paved with quartz.

The landscape is minimal yet elegant. However, provisions have been arranged to grow an elaborate garden in the future.

The house warming ritual of this amazing abode was celebrated in January this year. The family, meanwhile, is thrilled that they could now come to the comfort of the house of their dreams to enjoy the holidays.
