The unique landscape grants the house, the look and feel of a traditional resort.

This is the spectacular tale of a talented architect’s determination to give a chic makeover to her beloved ancestral home in Vanchiyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Noted architect Cindu shares a special emotional bond with the house that is more than eight decades old. She says that the beautiful house where she had spent her childhood days would surely excite sweet nostalgia in anyone. The house that got a modern makeover has been renamed as ‘House of Rose’ as the spaces exude incredible grace.

The spaces have been rearranged as multipurpose areas. Cindu has arranged an elegantly furnished office space here. Besides, spaces have been separated in the renovated structure, which could be rented out for hosting small parties or gatherings. Cindu, who had lots of free time during the lockdown period, took it as a mission to transform her favorite home into a dreamy abode where traditional charm meets modern facilities.

Interestingly, this house dons unique looks on the three sides. The sides of the house look nothing like the front. Meanwhile, the back, with a grand and spacious backyard, is the highlight of this fabulous mansion. The splendid views in the backyard are so attractive that the guests are excited to hang out here.

The unique landscape grants the house, the look and feel of a traditional resort. The semi-open space in the backyard has flooring done in exquisite Athangudi tiles and has eye-catching wall arts too.

The house has been separated into three sections for convenience. The outer courtyard is part of the first section which boasts of a traditional Japanese-style Zen garden.

The central area, meanwhile, is where unique curios and amazing artworks that were collected by Cindu from around the world have been exhibited. This area could be rightly called a quaint museum where you get to see some fabulous pieces of arts. Moreover, the visitors can buy the showpieces that are exhibited here. Besides, another antique space too has been arranged in this house. The items that adorn this area too have been collected from various parts of the world.

The rest of the house is elegantly furnished and boasts of modern amenities too. This is the space where parties and functions are hosted.

The most amazing fact is that the spaces have been renovated without losing the soul of the house. First, the interior spaces that were covered in cobwebs were cleaned. After that, the areas and the rooms that had been in a dilapidated state were dismantled. The roof was leaking in many areas. Besides repairing these, the flooring and furniture were given fresh coats of polish. Most of the walls are whitewashed and are not painted in emulsions.

Interestingly, this house has been renovated by strictly following the rules of the traditional vastusastra. Cindu says there had been a few areas on the wrong spot that exuded negative vibes. These areas were either dismantled or have been transformed into other spaces. The restructuring of the spaces has ensured a balance of energies and has converted the interiors into an amalgam of beautiful spots that fill the house with positive energy.

Cindu says she didn’t have the pressure of deadlines as she was working on her own house. She vows she had thoroughly enjoyed redesigning and renovating the house. Moreover, she is glad that she could oversee the construction works, giving timely instructions and making the necessary changes.
