A 35-year-old Kayamkulam house gets stunning makeover

Kayamkulam house renovation
The interiors of the house are designed minimally yet exude a classy elegance.

Suresh Babu, who worked at the naval base and his wife Saraswathy who retired as a teacher are thrilled to share their experiences of giving a stylish makeover to their old house that was more than three and half decades old. The house at Puthupally in Kayamkulam, Kerala now dons a modern and chic look, making it the perfect retirement home for the couple.

The old structure was a single storey concrete house that featured outdated designs and facilities. Roofing sheet had been installed to prevent leakage on the roof. Besides, congested spaces that scarcely received natural sunlight and fresh air, added to their woes. The house had initially faced the south direction. But, when a new road came in the west side, the house too got a facelift, with its entrance now facing west.

The elevation of the renovated structure features the chic style of contemporary architecture. Moreover, the flat–box style adds more dimension to the house. Designed in 2250 sq ft, this fabulous abode has a sit-out, formal living area, dining space, kitchen and two bedrooms in the ground floor. Meanwhile, the upper storey has two more bedrooms, an upper hall and a balcony garden too.

The interiors are designed minimally yet exude classy elegance. Old tiles have been replaced with matte finished vitrified tiles on the floor. Ready-made dining table set with benches on both sides is a new addition.

The stairway leads to a spacious hall where an old hanging cot has been reused. A fresh coat of polish adds more sheen to the hanging cot which instantly draws attention. A wall here has been highlighted with a popping blue color. Meanwhile, the curio installation of a yellow-colored cycle on this wall is an interesting addition.

The head sidewalls in the bedrooms too are highlighted with attractive shades of hues. The batch attached bedrooms have in–built wardrobes too.

The kitchen cupboards are made using aluminum composite panels. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with granite. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen area.

The family enjoys gardening and grows a beautiful garden in the balcony as there isn’t enough space in the front yard. This area has toughened glass roof which brings lots of natural sun shine. The spectacular garden is the family’s favorite spot to enjoy their evenings.

The renovation of this house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 30 lakh.

Among the many changes that were made to give a modern makeover to the house, dismantling the old roofing sheet and building an additional floor played a vital role in making the house spacious. An old bedroom has been transformed into an elegantly furnished living area. The sit-out is a newly added feature that blends well with the contemporary look of the elevation. Meanwhile, the old work area is now a bedroom that boats of all the required facilities. Interestingly, the lack of space was overcome by rearranging the spaces wisely, as per the needs and interests of the family.
