Guests awed by natural light inside this window-less TVPM home

The elevation is designed in the flat box style to save space.

Pramod, a software engineer is proud to show around his brand new house built on a small plot in Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The family wanted the house to overcome the spatial challenges posed by the plot with its classy features and efficient space management.

The elevation is designed in the flat box style to save space. After building the structure, an extension has been built to the front to be used as a car porch. This porch that features a stylish combination of glass and GI is pretty cost-effective too. Interestingly, only a single window is visible on the elevation from the outside. Pramod says that guests have often joked about it in the beginning. However, the jibes gave way to applauds and praises when they entered the beautiful house.

Designed in 1950 sqft, this amazing abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, three bedrooms and a home theatre. The landscape and garden, even though done in a meagre plot, is visually enchanting. The garden mostly has plants that require minimal maintenance. Meanwhile, an elegant Buddha figurine is the focal point in the garden.

The entrance door opens to an elegant ‘L’ shaped formal living area. A TV unit too has been arranged here. The pooja space, meanwhile, has been arranged just behind this. Interestingly, a grill partition that is decorated with indoor plants is what separates these areas. From the pooja space, one could get to the patio where the Buddha figurine relaxes you with positive vibes.

Vitrified tiles have been paved on the floor. The stairway, dining area, kitchen and the prayer area are all part of the spacious hall.

The open kitchen faces the dining area. A quaint breakfast counter too has been separated using a raised wooden platform. The kitchen cabinets, meanwhile, are done in marine plywood with a laminate finish.

There are two bedrooms in the ground floor while one is on the first floor. The bath attached bedrooms have inbuilt wardrobes for storage.

A modern home theater has been arranged on the first floor. Windows cannot be installed here as it would affect the acoustic quality of the home theater. That is the reason why any windows aren’t seen on the elevation. However, skylights have been built on the ceiling to let in the natural sunshine. There are skylights above the pooja space and the stairway too, illuminating the interiors with golden sunlight. The family says that there is no need to switch on lights during the day even though the structure does not have too many windows.
