Award-winning Thrithala house perfectly suits the tropical weather of Kerala

Laterite brick cladding has been used at several instances as an attractive designer element.

Thajudeen’s majestic abode in the beautiful countryside of Thrithala in Palakkad district, Kerala, is an architectural marvel that has been winning praises and accolades. His two siblings too live close to his home. However, Thajudeen’s house is unique and stands out for its fabulous designs and amazing amenities. The structure has been designed in the tropical – traditional style to suit the unique weather patterns of Kerala that receive lots of rain and sun shine throughout the year. Interestingly, this splendid abode had been chosen as the runner up for best design in South Zone Excellence Award by Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID).

This plot was a barren land where greenery couldn’t be spotted. It indeed is a splendid feat that this plot now has a beautiful and lush green landscape and garden along with a stylish structure. The plot lies below the road level and has paddy fields on the backside. The house has been designed to suit the unique layout of the plot. The owner wanted a single storey structure that has all the facilities and comfort of a double-storey house.

Designed in 5700 sqft, this palatial mansion has formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, majlis, kitchen with an adjacent work area and four bedrooms.

The walls are built using laterite stones. Laterite brick cladding has been used at many places as an attractive designer element. Tile-paved GI truss roof has been installed above the flat roof. The space between the roofs is used as a spacious multi-utility area.

The interiors have been separated into public, semi-public and private areas as the structure is single storey. The entrance door in the sit out opens to a corridor. The areas in the interiors are arranged on both sides of this corridor. A classy shelf is what acts as semi – partition that separates the living and the dining areas. Interestingly, a TV unit is arranged on the other side of the shelf.

The dining area is the soul of the house. It has a cooling swimming pool on one side and a charming green courtyard on the other side. The floor of the courtyard is paved with white and shiny pebbles. Meanwhile, grilles have been fixed on the roof here as an additional safety measure. The vines that grow from the courtyard has spread to these grilles too, making it look like an enchanting canopy of pleasant greenery.

The infinity pool is definitely the highlight of this house. A sliding glass door is what connects the pool area to the dining space. The water in the pool cools down the breeze before it enters the house through this sliding glass door.

Teak wood has been used to make all the important doors and windows. Meanwhile, the sliding doors are done in UPVC. Vitrified tiles in multiple textures have been paved on the floor in this house. Most of the furniture pieces are custom made and matches the general theme of the house. The interiors are furnished in plywood with a veneer finish.

The dining area and the pantry kitchen are designed in a semi-open style. Besides, the main kitchen there is a working kitchen as well as a work area. The cabinets here are made in plywood with veneer finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved in nano white. There is a door in the kitchen that opens to the pool area.

The family members wanted the bedrooms to be private spaces that have all the facilities. So, a private zone has been exclusively separated at the end of the corridor where four bedrooms are arranged. The bedrooms have attached bathrooms, inbuilt wardrobes and dressing spaces too. Interestingly, bay windows have been arranged in the bedrooms to relax and enjoy the fabulous views of the landscape.

The family is proud that they have turned barren land into a green spot that oozes life and positive vibes. Their relatives and friends are overwhelmed by the opulent designs and amazing ambience. This grand abode that celebrates nature through innovative designs has now become a major landmark in the locality.
