This traditional Kozhikode home is a dream-come-true for an NRI family

The sloped roof gives a traditional and tropical look to the elevation.

Mohandas, a native of Valayanad in Kozhikode, Kerala, is proud to share his experiences of building his dream dwelling in his hometown. “I grew up in a traditional household that honoured the unique cultural heritage of Kerala. Later, I migrated to Saudi Arabia to earn a living. I was determined to recreate the fabulous ambience of my childhood home when I build a house of my own. I met designer Jinsho while living as an expatriate. I think it is fate that I entrusted him with the construction of my house. We had many demands. Jinsho patiently listened to us and fulfilled our dreams in the most amazing way,” says Mohandas.

The 14 cents plot was full of plants and shading trees. The family didn’t mind altering the design of the house to retain these trees. Besides, they wanted the traditional style chaarupadi or a long sit-out with in-built sitting space. Mohandas was particular that the inner courtyard should bring natural sunshine and rain showers into the house.

Shingles have been paved on the sloped roof. This gives a traditional and tropical look to the elevation. Meanwhile, natural stones have been paved on the front yard allowing the rainwater to seep into the ground.

Designed in 2850 sqft, this splendid abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, upper living area and balcony.

The living and dining areas have been designed in an open style. Meanwhile, matte-finished tiles are paved on the floor. The custom-made furniture perfectly suits the general theme of the house.

“There is a double-height courtyard inside the house, just as we had wished. It has an open ceiling which brings in sunlight and rain. Grilles have been installed here as an additional safety feature. Meanwhile, the wall on the side is built using a grille and high-pressure laminate board. Arrangements are made for the water to flow out. Tiles that aren’t slippery have been paved on the floor here,” notes Mohandas.

Two bedrooms each are arranged on both the floors. The bath attached bedrooms have wardrobes for storage and dressing spaces. Bay windows with in–built sitting spaces are the highlights of the bedrooms.

The kitchen cabinets are made in plywood with a PVC laminate finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with granite.

The excellent cross ventilation grants a cool and pleasant ambience inside the house. So, there is no need to switch on the lights and fans during the day. “We have named our house ‘kala’ as we are delighted that we own an artistic house, just as we had dreamed,” smiles Mohandas.
