Shajahan and family lived in a 20-year-old concrete house at Punnayoorkulam in Thrissur which they decided to renovate after facing problems such as lack of sufficient natural light, air circulation and interior space. The results of the renovation are stunning. You can never guess that the house was rebuilt over an old structure.
The first step to transform the house according to the latest style was to demolish the sloping roof and replace it with a flat construction. Next, the position of the gate was changed and it provided more area on the compound for landscaping.
Space crunch in the interiors was overcome by rearranging the rooms. This was done by bringing down many separating walls. Meanwhile, additional windows facing outdoors brought more light inside the house. Indirect lighting also was arranged. More illumination was provided with a gypsum false ceiling and LED warm tone lights.
The renovated house has a porch, sit-out, formal living, family living, dining, kitchen, work area, two bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor. The total area of the house is 2930 sq ft.
Custom-made furniture makes the living space attractive and a full-length glass door leads from this area to the corridor. The dining table has a marble top and wooden chairs and another full-length glass door connects the dining area to the courtyard.
While the stairs are a metal structure covered with wooden planks, vertical slits along the steps bring in natural light to the interiors.
Another speciality of the house is the design of the bedrooms, which highlight a resort theme. Some design experiments have been tried on the head side wall, bringing a unique look. Attached bathroom, wardrobe and dressing space are part of the bedroom area.
