The grand old Kallivayal Bangalow in Erattupetta, Kerala, which is more than a century old, still hasn’t lost its regal charm. The elaborate spaces that sprawl like the branches of a banyan tree are the highlights of this single-storey mansion. The ancestral home boasts of traditional architectural styles and the spaces had been designed by strictly following the rules of Vastusastra. Interestingly, the house recently underwent a renovation without disrupting its traditional charm.

Owner Jose Kallivayal and his family share a unique emotional bond with the house as it had been handed over to him as ancestral property. The family were adamant that the basic structure of the house should not be altered even when it was given a modern makeover. Noted architect Rose Thampy deserves the credit for renovating this classic home to suit the modern lifestyle of the family members while retaining its soul and beauty.

The areas that were almost in a dilapidated state were renovated. The old charmer had wooden rafters, sit-out, mud tile paved roof, attic and limewashed walls. Most of the old plastering, plumbing, wiring and flooring were replaced without altering the structure.

Meanwhile, the house had many old objects that were made in sturdy timber. The attic ceiling, windows and doors were faded and looked dull. These were given a fresh coat of polish to bring back the shine. Moreover, the old flooring has been replaced with sleek green hued kota stone flooring.

The regal opulence of exquisite pieces of furniture, crafted in timber, elevates the ambience of the interiors. A classic wooden dining table and cane chairs are part of the dining area.

The old kitchen in the ancestral home was quite spacious. This was given a modern makeover, turning it into a space of comfort as well as utility. The new kitchen is compact and boats of modern facilities and equipment. The cabinets here are done in timber to complement the rest of the beautifully furnished interiors. Meanwhile, the newly added breakfast counter has already become a popular spot, where the family members love to hang out.

Meanwhile, the family is delighted that their favourite ancestral home got a modern facelift without losing the mesmerizing charm of the traditional structure and spaces.
