Shaji and his family who are settled abroad had always dreamed of building a house of their own in their hometown in the beautiful countryside of Idathirinji near Irinjalakuada in Thrissur, Kerala. Their brand-new house features a contemporary architectural style while boasting unique designs that suit the weather in Kerala. The owner wanted a single-story house to make maintenance easier and to ensure an amazing bond and communication between the family members.

The house mostly dons lighter shades of hues that are soothing to the eyes. A classic combination of grey and white adorn the outer walls. Meanwhile, the sitting space built in the cantilever style is an attractive addition. The roof here is highlighted with bright red colour to add the perfect contrast. There are UPVC windows on both sides of the long sit-out to bring lots of natural light and air into the house.

The front yard is paved with kadappa stones and grass in alternate layers. The landscape is quite simple to make maintenance hassle-free. This splendid abode, designed in 2900 sqft, has a sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining area, courtyard, kitchen with an adjacent work area, four bedrooms and bathrooms. The spaces are arranged as semi-public and private areas. Meanwhile, the common areas are designed in a semi-open style to make the interiors look spacious.

Custom-made furniture sets adorn the living areas in this house. Meanwhile, the TV unit decorated with wooden paneling is the highlight of the family living area.

Interestingly, there is a unique space in this house, which isn’t commonly seen in homes. This sitting area, arranged a few feet below the floor level is a cozy spot to relax and unwind. Besides an in-built sitting space, there is a comfortable easy chair too here.

The simple dining table has a sturdy wooden frame. Meanwhile, the nano white table top adds a sheen to it. The wooden chairs with eye-catching upholstery work perfectly complement the table. There are lots of windows on the wall in the dining area. Besides, a door here opens to the adjacent courtyard. The interiors would be filled with cool air and natural sunshine if this door is opened.

The bedrooms have been designed to ensure good ventilation and an ample supply of natural light. The bath-attached bedrooms have in-built wardrobes and separate dressing spaces too.

The kitchen cabinets are done in marine ply with PU paint finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with granite. An adjacent work area and store room complete the modern kitchen.

Even though the family doesn’t live here permanently, the interiors are designed to make maintenance easier. Such single-story houses ensure that family members are always connected. The family confesses that many people had wondered why they didn’t build a two-storey house on a moderate budget. However, seeing the special bond that the family shares, the owner is delighted that he was right to build a beautiful single-storey.
