Kannur: PV Lathika, who has been paralysed from waist below after being diagnosed with polio, is all set make history as the first woman to take part in the state Paralympics bench press power lifting championship.

She wowed the audience by effortlessly lifting 25 kilograms at a competition conducted at the Mudayadu indoor stadium.

“I participate not only for my own good, but also to inspire others like me to do it. I am sure that there are lot of people like me in the district and across the state. They all should get a venue to showcase their talents. It could be achieved only if the authorities show some interest in our cause,” says Lathika.

It was Basheer Panapuzha, the district coordinator of the Paralympics power lifting who inspired Lathika to take up the sport. She finds her livelihood by making umbrella and soap powder at home. Lathika is supported by her mother and two sisters.
