New Delhi: Union Home Ministry has announced plans to designate land for a memorial honouring former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as communicated to his family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

In a release titled "Facts of the matter regarding a memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh," the ministry disclosed that Kharge submitted a request for the memorial.

Following the Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed both Kharge and Singh’s family of the decision to provide the space for the memorial, reported PTI.

The ministry further explained that while the cremation and related rituals could proceed, the allocation process would take time as a trust must be established to oversee the memorial.

Singh, who headed the Congress-led UPA government, was India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.

On Friday, the Congress accused the government of intentionally delaying the selection of a site for Singh’s cremation and memorial, terming it a deliberate affront to India’s first Sikh Prime Minister.

The party’s criticism came after the home ministry announced that Singh’s last rites would take place with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi, at 11.45 am on Saturday.
