Idukki: A hartal, declared by the LDF, UDF and NDA, began in Idukki's Vannappuram panchayat and Ernakulam's Paingottoor panchayat on Monday following the tragic death of a 23-year-old youth in a wild elephant attack. The victim, Amar Ilahi, a native of Mullaringadu, was attacked while untying his cattle at a teak plantation near the Kothamangalam forest range, just 300 metres from his home.

After an autopsy, Amar's body was handed over to his family on Monday morning, and his funeral was held at Mullaringadu Juma Masjid.

Amar's friend Mansoor was with him at the time of the incident. While Mansoor managed to escape, Amar sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Thodupuzha Taluk Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

The incident sparked protests by locals in front of the Thodupuzha Hospital on Sunday. Residents demanded urgent measures, including driving wild elephants back to the forest, installing solar fences, and ensuring the Rapid Response Team (RRT) services to address the recurring human-wildlife conflict in the area.
