Kochi/Kottayam: Senior Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader and Kottayam MP Francis George, who recently drew attention for his remarks on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, clarified on Thursday that his statements had been misinterpreted. George, the party’s lone representative in the Lok Sabha, stated his position aligns with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which opposes the bill.

Speaking after a 24-hour protest in Munambam near Kochi on January 20, George expressed his support for the bill, reported PTI. He described certain provisions of the existing Waqf Act as "draconian" and advocated for necessary changes. The protest, part of a relay hunger strike, focused on reclaiming revenue rights over land claimed by the Waqf Board.

On Thursday, George clarified that he had not pledged support for the bill but would instead participate in the parliamentary discussion to suggest amendments. He emphasised the UDF’s opposition to the bill, citing the unanimous resolution passed by the Kerala Assembly in October 2023, urging the Centre to withdraw the proposed amendments.

While addressing the Munambam protesters, George reiterated the importance of protecting the community's rights and highlighted the ongoing efforts to achieve consensus on the bill, which has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) since August 2024.

The Kerala Congress (Joseph), a key UDF ally, earlier faced scrutiny over George’s initial remarks, contrasting with the alliance’s official stance. The BJP, meanwhile, welcomed his earlier comments, with leader Shone George expressing approval.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, seeks to address regulatory challenges and improve the management of waqf properties.
