S P Saneesh, an eighth-grade student of Konni GHSS, had a miraculous escape after a live electric line snapped and fell on him near his home, close to the Konni mini civil station. The electric lines, which had been brushing against each other during strong winds, finally gave way—one snapping and falling with a spark-emitting arc. Alerted by the crackling sound and flashes, Saneesh instinctively leapt into a neighbouring property located about 15 feet below. Although the live wire briefly touched his shoulder, he escaped without serious injuries.
His mother, Manju, who had just returned from a PTA meeting at the school, witnessed the terrifying moment. In her panic, she injured herself while rushing to help. Saneesh’s father, Satheesh, grandfather Chandran, and other residents arrived shortly after hearing the commotion. The power line was later deactivated after locals alerted the KSEB section office. An overseer arrived and pushed the wire aside. The family, however, expressed outrage over what they described as repeated, ignored complaints about the dangerously low-hanging wires near coconut trees.
"We filed a complaint with the KSEB section office, warning that the lines could brush against each other. When nothing happened, we followed up with multiple calls, but those were ignored too. If the wire had fallen on his head, we would have lost him," said Satheesh, Saneesh’s father. KSEB officials denied receiving any prior complaint. They attributed the incident to a coconut leaf touching the line during the heavy winds.
"I rushed from the courtyard when I heard the crackling noise and saw the sparks. I tried to reach Saneesh, but by then, he had already jumped to safety," said Chandran, the boy’s grandfather.
