Vandoor: The service wire of the street lamps in front of the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School is hanging low, posing danger to the public. The line hangs so low that even little children could easily touch them. The wire that is wrapped around the iron lamp post is hanging low in a precarious position.
The end of the wire has been attached to a metre box that is left open, within a hand’s reach. The green light is on in the metre box indicating that there is electricity supply. Besides, the meter seems to be functioning which means that electricity could be running through the wires that hang low. However, it’s been months since the lamp posts have stopped working. The authorities haven’t even tried to check whether there is electricity in the line or to remove the wires. The green light on the metre box was on yesterday too indicating the presence of electricity.
The electric wire is hanging dangerously low in front of the school where more than three thousand students study from class one to the higher secondary classes. Things would get out of hand if the students try to lift the wire using their hands to walk underneath it during the rush hours.
The lamp posts were installed using the MLA’s development fund when a divider was placed in the middle during road development in this area. Earlier, underground wiring was done here. The service wire was installed in the open and given connection after the underground wire got damaged. This wire is now hanging low at a dangerous position threatening the safety of hundreds of school children as well as the public.
The panchayat authorities say that the contract for maintenance was expired and that it has been renewed now. But, the KSEB states that it is the responsibility of the panchayat to do the maintenance. Meanwhile, the people have been urging the authorities to inspect the site and do the needful to avoid any mishaps or untoward incidents.
