Tree fall in Alappuzha causes ₹3.57 lakh loss to KSEB; board asks Tourism Dept to pay up

Alappuzha: The KSEB has suffered an estimated loss of ₹3.57 lakh after a massive tree on the banks of the canal near the YMCA junction was uprooted, crashing onto eight electric posts and power lines. The amount reflects the cost of restoring supply to nearby households by replacing the damaged posts and equipment.
The board has written to the Tourism Department seeking compensation, alleging that the tree fell after soil was removed from the canal bank as part of the department’s construction activities.
Repair work on the two feeders that were completely destroyed in the incident began on Thursday. The KSEB has decided to install the new electric posts away from this area, as many more trees are on the verge of getting uprooted. The option of installing posts on the opposite side of the canal and routing power through alternate feeders is also under consideration.
While contractors removed the fallen tree from the canal, the cables remain submerged. Power has been temporarily restored through alternative feeders until full repairs are completed.
The incident occurred around 6 pm on Wednesday, when the tree toppled onto the posts and snapped lines feeding the Chungam and Nehru Trophy areas under KSEB’s North Section.
