Koratty: A persistent leak in a damaged canal at Perumbi has been sending a huge volume of water to waste, with no agency stepping in to fix it.

Water has been steadily escaping from the Cada canal, which carries flow from the end of the Konoor canal to the Perumbi stream, after a section of its wall collapsed. The leakage now runs through the yard of Moozhikkulam Chandrabalan before draining into the stream.

When the house owner approached the Irrigation Department seeking to restore he canal with a protective wall and urgent repairs to plug the leak, officials directed him to the panchayat, stating they had no funds. But when he turned to the panchayat authorities, they too refused to take responsibility.

Left with no choice, he filed complaints with the Chief Minister twice and submitted petitions at the Navakerala Sadas and the Taluk Sadass. Acting on the complaint filed at the Navakerala Sadas, the panchayat secretary replied that the issue had been noted and that follow-up action would be taken. Though this response came a year ago, no steps have been initiated since.
